This academic project explores how a highly constrained site can become the catalyst for a distinctive residential experience. Situated on an elongated plot measuring 10 by 40 metres, with access from streets to both the north and south and a maximum building height of only four metres, the project forms part of a continuous sequence of similarly proportioned parcels. Rather than resisting these limitations, the design embraces them as the starting point for the architectural concept.
At the heart of the proposal lies a centrally positioned patio, conceived as a private outdoor room and the spatial anchor of the dwelling. More than simply providing daylight and ventilation, the courtyard introduces a moment of openness and calm within the depth of the site, establishing a direct relationship between interior and exterior living.
The residence is organised around a continuous linear circulation spine that connects the principal living areas at either end of the plot. Public functions, including the living spaces, occupy the northern portion of the house, while the sleeping quarters are positioned towards the south. This arrangement takes advantage of the site's dual access while creating a clear sequence between the different zones of domestic life.
Along this central route, secondary functions such as the kitchen, pantry, bathroom and study are carefully integrated between the main living spaces and the site boundaries. The resulting layout transforms movement through the house into a spatial experience, where changing proportions, framed views and the presence of the courtyard continuously shape the perception of the interior.
The project demonstrates how simple architectural principles can generate a rich spatial environment. By organising the dwelling around a central void and a clear circulation framework, the design turns the site's restrictive dimensions into an opportunity to explore proportion, sequence and the relationship between enclosed and open space.
